Title: All for a Boy

Directors: Jasmit Cholia and Zara Sayed

Stars: Samandeep Bains, Rishad Dahag, Zara Sayed

‘All for a Boy’ is a short length docu-drama which gives us an insight of the things girls of the 21st century get caught up in. This docu-drama helps us recognise the fact that, girls are no longer worrying about achieving high grades in their education, but would rather go to certain lengths to please boys. Lets see the world through 15-year-old Zara’s eyes, the protagonist who is represented in a negative way, because of the way she acts, dresses and comes across to people. How will she cope when she struggles to choose between education and boys?

The docu drama opens with a montage sequence of Zara getting ready for school mixed with a combination of preview clips which we will later come face to face with in the drama. By including these preview like clips, enigma is created from the start and it meets a target of entertaining its audience. The use of cinema verity style footage crates realism and authenticity keeping the audience in suspense creating more enigma codes, also notice the split screen shots showing us the differences between Zara and Saman.

Zara the protagonist feels as if there is nothing more important in her life than her relationship. We see her go to extreme lengths to keep it all in one piece, even if it does mean forgetting about school. On the other hand, we have a bright student who focuses on nothing but her education, Saman. Saman is represented in a positive role to Zara. In the drama we notice how Saman finds Zara a threat, but she cannot stand up to her leaving her words unspoken.

Interesting Facts:

The infamous Pink Scene which was shown to the class, was UNFORTUNATELY shot in the wrong camera mode, making it look as if it was done on a camera phone. This meant we had to film it again, we did but it wasn’t as good as the first one.

The point of view shot of Zara sneaking into the house was shot at Saman’s house with me actually holding the camera in one hand and trying to open the door in the other! No wonder it was so authentic!!

The scene where Saman is ringing Zara had to be shot like 3 times. The worse thing was that Saman decided to get changed twice, half way between the shots!!
